FST EMPLOYMENT PROJECT

The Employment Agency Places FST workers as temporary and part time workers with other employers.
Mainly office work at present but developing into other areas
The employment agency was set up in late 1998. Since that time it has made a few adjustments to the way it operates but its key functions are still the same. It is based in the main office in Woolwich.

The Employment Agency Manager is responsible for recruiting the Main Office workforce and takes an active interest in their progress all the time that they are at FST. He encourages our workers to explore the local job market and discusses employment issues with them, both on an individual basis and one to one. Similarly, he discusses individuals’ progress on a daily basis with Mark the Main Office Manager. To ensure that people’s understanding of work is not limited to the FST model, he arranges brief work ‘tasters’ with local employers.
By working in the employer’s office for say a couple of half days the worker gets to see how he/she may have to adapt his/her skills and attitudes in another environment.
These tasters are also useful in allowing the worker to see how ready that person is for going on a longer placement. If the person is ready, Antoni will seek a longer placement for them.

In 2002 a dozen people have already been out on work tasters. We currently have four longer term placements with outside employers and we hope to increase this number soon.

In March 2002, Gus found a job as administrator/ bookkeeper with a large retail company in Covent Garden, following a ‘career discussion’ in the wake of going on a work taster
Such work placements have often given our workforce the confidence to find permanent paid employment. Antoni has weekly lists of local NHS and Council vacancies and several of our workforce have recently applied for these jobs. We will also discuss any other vacancies and will give advice on CVs, application forms, interviews etc when required.
